The investigation against Donald Trump

Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that the US Department of Justice is corrupt and selective in its investigations. Trump published a post to this effect on Sunday on his Truth Social network.

"The Department of 'Justice' is corrupt. Offered Christopher Steele $1 million to lie about me, paid a Russian fortune to 'get to Trump,' told Facebook not to mention Hunter Biden's laptop before the election because the alleged case 'was Russian disinformation' when they know it wasn't," he wrote. Trump also questioned whether special prosecutor Jack Smith would investigate the causes of the January 6, 2021 riots outside the Capitol, which the former president believes were the result of a "corrupt 2020 election".

It is worth noting that Justice Secretary-Attorney General Merrick Garland previously announced that Jack Smith, who previously worked at the International Criminal Court in The Hague and until recently was a prosecutor at the Special Court for Kosovo, would become the special prosecutor in the Trump case.

As Garland explained, the proceedings against Trump relate in particular to allegations that he kept secret documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, as well as obstructing the confirmation of the previous presidential election results and the transfer of power to new US leader Joe Biden.

The Times reported in October, citing a US intelligence analyst, that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation had offered former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele a reward of up to $1 million for information confirming false allegations of collusion between 45th US President Donald Trump and Russia.
