Hockey World Mourns Loss

NHL legend Henrik Lundqvist recently opened up about the profound impact the tragic deaths of NHL All-Star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, have had on the hockey world. The two brothers were struck by an allegedly drunk driver while biking near their hometown in New Jersey on August 29, just a day before their sister’s wedding. The Gaudreau family, mourning this devastating loss, had to cancel the wedding in light of the tragedy.

“It’s such a tragedy. It’s had a huge effect on all the players in the hockey community,” Lundqvist shared in an emotional interview.

Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were well-known and loved by many. While Johnny made his mark on the ice, Matthew, though lesser-known in the hockey community, was remembered fondly by those who knew him. Their loss sent shockwaves not just through their family but through the entire hockey world, which is known for its close-knit nature. Lundqvist emphasized the deep connection shared by players both on and off the ice, noting that Johnny was always a kind presence at All-Star events.

The brothers were celebrating their sister Katie’s upcoming wedding when the tragedy struck. The driver, Sean M. Higgins, admitted to consuming alcohol before getting behind the wheel and is facing two counts of vehicular homicide. Court documents revealed that his blood-alcohol level was .087, slightly above the legal limit, at the time of the accident. His erratic driving ultimately led to the fatal collision, killing the brothers instantly.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Gaudreau family is fighting to keep certain records, such as 911 calls and police footage, from becoming public. The family continues to grieve their loss, as Johnny’s wife Meredith also shared during the brothers’ memorial that she is expecting their third child.

This heartbreaking incident has not only highlighted the dangers of impaired driving but has also left a lasting scar on the hockey community and beyond.
