John Lithgow, the distinguished six-time Emmy winner, is reportedly in final discussions to portray the legendary Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s highly anticipated television adaptation of Harry Potter. The 79-year-old actor is set to step into the shoes of the Hogwarts headmaster, as confirmed by several sources, including Deadline and Variety.
“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals,” an HBO spokesperson shared with Variety.
Fans of the Harry Potter universe know that Richard Harris first embodied the wise and kind Dumbledore in the original film series, starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001). Following Harris' passing, Michael Gambon took over the iconic role, and Jude Law later portrayed a young Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films.
In April 2023, HBO announced its plans to adapt the beloved book series into a television show, which was initially slated for streaming on Max. The network described the project as "a faithful adaptation" of J.K. Rowling’s works, promising an in-depth exploration of the magical world fans have adored for over two decades.
HBO further revealed that the series will feature a fresh cast, ushering in a new generation of fans. "Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally,” the network said in a statement.
In a separate interview, Rowling expressed her excitement: “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation, which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series."
With Francesca Gardiner (known for her work on Succession) confirmed as showrunner and Mark Mylod tapped as director, the series seems poised for great things. Additionally, HBO kicked off an open casting call in September 2024 for the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, specifically seeking child actors from the U.K. and Ireland, ages 9 to 11.
The eagerly awaited Harry Potter TV series is set to premiere in 2026.
