Dream Won, Heart Broken
For Derrick Harmon, the night of April 25 was meant to be the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. The Pittsburgh Steelers had just selected him 21st overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, a dream few ever realize. But before he could fully celebrate, Harmon was faced with devastating news: his mother, Tiffany Saine, passed away only moments after he told her about his selection.
“She’s at the hospital right now on life support, so that was a little bittersweet because she worked just as hard as me to get to this moment,” Harmon shared emotionally during a press conference shortly after the draft.
Tiffany Saine had long been Harmon’s source of strength and motivation. In 2021, while Harmon was still attending Michigan State University, Saine suffered a massive stroke that left her paralyzed on her left side. The event reshaped Harmon’s world but not his determination. Rather than pulling him away from his ambitions, it fueled them. Even when the opportunity came to transfer to the University of Oregon in 2024, Harmon hesitated, concerned about being farther from home. It was Saine who insisted he follow his dreams, reminding him that every decision he made so far had been with her in mind and that now, it was time to choose for himself.
Throughout his college career, her fight remained the silent engine behind every success. As Harmon pushed through injuries, tough practices, and the daily grind of being a student-athlete, he thought of his mother, who continued to work and push herself forward after multiple brain surgeries.
The night of the draft was a mixture of triumph and heartbreak. After receiving the call from the Steelers, Harmon immediately rushed to the hospital, eager to share the news. Although Saine was on life support, Harmon believed she could hear him. Telling her he had been drafted was one of the final gifts he could give her a symbol that everything they fought for together had been worth it.
In the hours following her passing, Harmon honored her memory on social media, posting an emotional tribute alongside a childhood photo. “This all for you!!! And I’m do what you told me I can do a long time ago. I love you till the wheels fall off!!!! he wrote.
