Inside Emma’s Spider-Man Love
It’s been nearly a decade since Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield called it quits, but the Oscar-winning actress recently shared her thoughts on their time together during an interview for Vogue’s Life in Looks.
Looking back on the early days of The Amazing Spider-Man, where she met Garfield, Stone opened up about their connection. She played Gwen Stacy, while Garfield embodied the iconic Spider-Man/Peter Parker. They sparked a romance during filming in 2011, which lasted until their split in 2015.
“I mean, I really loved doing Spider-Man,” Stone recalled. “I loved everyone I worked with. I met Andrew there.”
Stone was quick to add that it wasn’t just Garfield who made the experience memorable. She expressed fondness for her entire Spider-Man cast, including Sally Field and director Marc Webb. "It was really a special time in my life," she said.
Though she’s a fan of reminiscing about the people she’s worked with, Stone admitted that the films themselves sometimes fade into the background. “The recurring theme is the people, more than kind of like the film itself, is what sticks with me for so long,” she shared. “And so I have only like the fondest memories of this whole experience.”
While Emma Stone has fond memories of her time on Spider-Man, not every part of the experience was smooth sailing. One aspect that didn’t sit well with the actress? The grueling press tours. "I don't really know how people do it," Stone admitted. "I remember doing nine countries in two weeks, and being in a state of jet lag like I never knew existed. I felt completely out of my mind the entire time."
As for Andrew Garfield, he’s also had his say on their shared past. In an exclusive October 2024 interview with Esquire, Garfield responded to rumors surrounding his relationship with Stone, sparked by the fan theory that La La Land — the 2016 film in which Stone starred — was inspired by their romance. "I guess people need something to believe," Garfield shrugged. When asked for further details, he remained silent, saying, “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life.”
In the years since their split, Emma Stone has entered a new chapter. She married comedian Dave McCary in 2020, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Louise Jean McCary, in March 2021.
