Former The Bachelorette lead Katie Thurston has shared a deeply personal family update, revealing that her mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 35-year-old reality TV alum announced the news via Instagram on Monday, January 19, explaining that she traveled to Seattle to accompany her mother to her first medical appointment after the diagnosis. In her post, Thurston emphasized the critical role of self-advocacy in women’s health, writing, “I hate that we have to be our biggest advocate but also, it’s what will save our life.”

Through an accompanying carousel, Thurston detailed how her mother’s cancer was detected despite initially reassuring test results. According to the information she shared, her mother received a “negative” and “probably benign” assessment from a December mammogram, with dense breast tissue noted but no recommendation for additional screening. It was only after Thurston urged her mother to request further imaging that a breast ultrasound revealed suspicious masses, leading to a breast MRI, biopsies, and a confirmed cancer diagnosis—identified within weeks of the original mammogram.

The family news arrives nearly a year after Thurston publicly disclosed her own breast cancer diagnosis at age 34. On March 28, shortly after Us Weekly confirmed her marriage to comedian Jeff Arcuri on March 22, Thurston revealed that her cancer had metastasized to her liver, advancing her condition to stage IV.
