On Sunday, he once again proved that he won’t back down from online detractors after his praise for cricketer Virat Kohli sparked unwarranted trolling. Following India’s victory against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy, Akhtar took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate Kohli’s standout performance. "Virat Kohli, zindabad! We all are so, so, so proud of you!" he wrote, lauding the cricket star. However, his post soon attracted negative comments, with some users attempting to twist his words into a communal debate. One such troll mocked Akhtar’s support for Kohli, prompting the 80-year-old to fire back with a scathing response. In Hindi, he wrote: "I have the blood of freedom fighters running through my veins. And you have the blood of the British servants running in yours. Never forget this difference." His cutting reply quickly gained traction, earning applause from many of his followers. Another user sarcastically questioned his admiration for Kohli, insinuating that it was out of character. Akhtar, however, remained unfazed, swiftly dismissing the remark with his signature wit. A vocal atheist and social commentator, Akhtar has long been targeted for his outspoken views on faith and politics. Yet, time and again, he has demonstrated that he is unafraid to call out bigotry, making him both a revered and controversial figure in public discourse. Meanwhile, the cricket world had its own reasons to celebrate. India’s commanding win against Pakistan by six wickets was led by Kohli’s exceptional performance. His century not only sealed the victory but also marked his 14,000th run in one-day international cricket—his first century in the ICC Champions Trophy and a powerful statement of his return to peak form.
