Joshua Henry Safdie is an American filmmaker recognized for his gritty, high-intensity storytelling and collaborations with his younger brother, Benny Safdie. Together, the Safdie brothers became breakout voices in independent cinema, earning critical acclaim for their crime thrillers Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019), both known for their frenetic pacing, psychological tension, and street-level realism. Their work helped redefine modern anxiety-driven thrillers and solidified their status as influential auteurs.
In 2024, it was reported that Joshua and Benny would no longer co-direct films, choosing instead to pursue independent creative paths. This marked a significant turning point in their careers after more than a decade of collaborative filmmaking.
Joshua Safdie’s first feature following the split, Marty Supreme, is scheduled for release on December 25, 2025. The film marks his return to solo directing for the first time since The Pleasure of Being Robbed (2008), signaling a new creative chapter as he steps out on his own.
