Biography
Roger Allers was an American film director, screenwriter, animator, storyboard artist and playwright. He was best known for co-directing Disney Animation's The Lion King (1994), the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of all time, and for writing the Broadway adaptation of the same name. He also directed Sony Pictures Animation's first feature-length animated film, Open Season (2006) and the animated adaptation of The Prophet.
Career
Allers began his career at Disney as a storyboard artist and writer, contributing to animated classics before stepping into directing. Beyond film, he also wrote the book for the Broadway adaptation of The Lion King, helping translate the animated hit into one of the most successful stage musicals in history.
Outside of Disney, Allers directed Sony Pictures Animation’s first feature-length animated film, Open Season (2006), marking a major milestone for the studio. He later directed the animated adaptation of The Prophet, based on the work of Kahlil Gibran, further cementing his reputation for blending visual storytelling with literary and theatrical influences.
