Kimbrel's Bold Pitch

In a pivotal moment at Citizens Bank Park, 45,831 fans fell into an eerie silence as Ronald Acuña Jr. hit the ball toward centerfield. It was the top of the seventh, Phillies led by two runs, two outs, bases loaded, and the game's fate hung in the balance.

Then, in an instant, the crowd exploded in a deafening roar as the ball descended. Just like so many attempts by the Atlanta team throughout this series, it found its way into the glove of a Phillies' fielder.

Centerfielder Johan Rojas, in the midst of the euphoria following Philadelphia's 3–1 series-clinching victory, couldn't help but exclaim, "If you want to score against me playing centerfield, you're going to have to hit a homer."

This moment was just one of the many memorable lines and incidents that marked this intense series. Notably, Atlanta shortstop Orlando Arcia's taunt of Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper after Game 2, which ended with Harper getting doubled off first base, became a source of amusement for the Phillies and their fans. They adopted Arcia's words as their rallying cry, from the crowd's chants of "Attaboy" when Arcia made an out to Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering proudly wearing an "Attaboy Harper" t-shirt during the postgame celebration.

On the pitcher's mound, Cotham offered some crucial advice to Kimbrel, urging him to stop overthinking his delivery. "It's just you, J.T., and Acuña," he emphasized. "Go out there and be yourself." Realmuto chimed in, adding, "Trust your stuff; it's too good. You've got this guy."

With newfound confidence, Kimbrel nodded and said, "I've got him."

The first pitch he threw was a fastball outside for a ball, but Kimbrel quickly found his groove. He followed up with a well-placed fastball at the bottom of the zone, which Acuña took for a strike, and a devastating knuckle curve down and in, causing Acuña to swing and miss. Acuña managed to foul off another low fastball, and Kimbrel followed it up with a knuckle curve outside for ball two. The tension reached its peak as Acuña fouled off an inside fastball.

Then, almost daringly, Kimbrel delivered a pitch that was almost identical to the last. "It was in just enough," remarked Realmuto as Rojas made an incredible catch. The stadium erupted with cheers. It was one of the best-hit balls by Atlanta in the entire series, but it was an out.
